Sometimes Stories Just Don't End

I was going to end the story, but it never ended. The offficer never came to interview and nothing was ever done to Janine. Miss Virginia was never given any justice. Things just stayed as they were. Miss Virginia called the police station many times. They've probaly peed on her file and left it to become rancid until it one day evaporates. I imagine that cases such as these take time and money to resolve, so it's easier to just forget about them. I'm afraid there isn't much protection for the elderly. You would think somebody would care. After all, we'll all be old one day, if we're lucky.

In my mind, I've compared Janine to America and Miss Virginia to Iraq. Both America and Janine pretended to want to help out, and both were just out for number one and really didn't give a shit about helping. They just wanted what they could take for themselves. Miss Virginia and Iraq just want to be left alone to live their lives the way they were before they were interupted by such do gooders. It's scarey what people can get away with. We're still in Iraq. I don't know when we'll be leaving, but even after we do we'll leave behingd wounds and damage. Janine is out of Miss Virginia's life, but she's had no punnishment for the harm she's caused and she has left behind wounds and damage. America is not out of Iraq's life and we better hope that we're not too harshly punnished for all the damage we've caused.

SMALL CRIMES GET NO TIME

I understand that jails are overcrowded and that it's expensive to prosecute, but this makes it so easy to be dishonest. To take advantage of people who are weak. Society makes it easy. Overcrowded jails make it easy. If a person doesn't have a conscience, we're all in trouble. Here are two good sites to check out:

I think that anyone working with the elderly should be screened very thoroughly. I also think that any crimes committed against the elderly should have extra harsh punishment. Here are other sites to check out. Florida Probate Litigation http://www.flprobatelitigation.com/

I'm not really interested in geriatrics, but seeing the way that they're treated makes me want to try to make a dirrerence. They are as needy as infants, but not as cute. Miss Virginia is a real challenge, but she has grown on me and I have come to love her very much. I think that in time her relationship with her niece will fully recover.

POLICE TO THE RESCUE

So, Virginia didn't want to call the police on Janine. She was afraid that she would show up at her door and give her a hard time or hurt her or something. Virginia is paranoid by nature as it is. She called Social Services, the Elderly Abuse Hotline, Lawyers that specialize in Elderly Law and security in her building. They all told her to call the police. Finally she decided to call the police. Because it was a non emergency, the police said that they would be there within a two hour time period. Well, they took five hours. Four phone calls later an officer showed up at the door. She had evidence accumulated and locked away in the desk. There were statements from the bank showing copies of seven forged checks, and there were bills with erroneous charges on them.

The police officer took a statement and collected all the evidince that he needed and told Virginia that he'd be out of town, but he would try to find someone to take over the case for him. Well, he was out of town for twelve days and no one wanted to take the case. It wasn't important enough. Virginia made me call every other day to see what progress they had made. While I was kindly and calmly trying to inquire about the investigation, she'd be yelling in the background, "This is ridiculous, the bank and I have done all the work for you, just go arrest her!" The officer that answered the phone would say that nothing will be done for the case until the officer who took the report gets back from vacation. She was furious and called back herself and asked the officer to put his boss on the phone, she was on the phone telling her whole life story and I just sat back and enjoyed the show. She ended up getting nowhere, they won't proceed with the case until the officer gets back from vacation. She threatened to call the Governor, and was told that the Governor won't do anything for the case until the officer gets back from vacation either, but to go ahead and call him if she'd like.

Yesterday I had to call again at Virginia's insistence, of course. This time the officer actually got on the phone. He said that he was out of town for twelve days, then had to go to a training course and then he was tied up with a big case. He assured me that he would work on nothing but Virginia's case for the second half of his day. He also mentioned that he had heard that Virginia called many times while he was away and I said yes she did. Everyone who knows Virginia knows that she is very persistent. He is coming to Virginia's Apartment tomorrow to interview me. I can assure you that tomorrow will be a very interesting day.

TOO GOOD TO BE TRUE?

I worked seven days a week caring for Miss Virginia in her home and it was at long last time for vacation. Because she's so fussy, my boss planned ahead and started sending potential *fill ins* to take my place while I was away. There were a few very kind women who came to learn the ropes, and they were all told, "Thank you so much for your time dear, but this just wont possibly work out." When they left, she would explain her reasoning to me. One, "had the sanitation of a hill-billy" another, "just doesn't understand about American cooking" the third, "just wasn't strong enough to handle the job." My boss became very frustrated and decided she'd do the job herself.

She came to the apartment to learn the duties of the job. Miss Virginia loved her, she's very attractive, clean and pleasant. I felt good about leaving Virginia in her care. While I was away, they got along famously. Janine bent over backwards to make Virginia happy. She even did stuff that I refused to do. Janine blew up a picture of Virginia and her husband and gave it to her as a gift. Things were quite different when I got back. Virginia's niece was no longer speaking to her and was removed from the will and as power of attorney.

School was starting the week I got back and Janine was going to cover the days that I needed off for classes. She told me at the last minute that she was going to take an extra day from me because it would be better for her. I thought that was a bit rude, but I said it was fine. One day shortly after, I did some shopping for Virginia and when I went to put the receipt in her check book I noticed that Janine had written herself a few checks. I asked Virginia what they were for and she didn't know. I called Janine and asked her. "What are these checks made out to you for?" She said she "I've been doing a lot of errands for Virginia.". I asked, "where are the receipts?" She said, "they must have been misplaced." She wouldn't or couldn't be more specific when I pressed her on the issue. It was as if I asked her what color the sky was and she told me what color the grass was and how tall the trees were.

Virginia fired her, but I was still under contract with Janine's company, she was the owner. Virginia had to pay the company to continue my services. In the meanwhile, the bank did an investigation and it turned out that Janine forged seven checks. This was in a two week time period. Here was this woman who came in to help out, and she ends up ripping off a 91 year old woman. I had a few heated arguments with Janine, but I was getting nowhere. Virginia's niece began to handle things. By this time, we saw that Janine instigated the fight between Virginia and the niece to make Virginia more vulnerable. The niece ended up getting me out of the contract, the bank ended up taking funds out of Janine's account and Virginia ended up stiffing her on bills owed for services that the company already paid me for. Virginia and the niece have *made up*, but things aren't quite the same.
